Galliano AW 2011/2012
A striking and modern collection by Raf Simons for Dior. Interesting to compare it to Galliano’s previous collection.
Raf’s signature clean lines and minimalism, mixed with dramatic color and delicate workmanship to revive Dior’s vision, from classically tailored dresses updated with angular, sculpted hips, to bar jackets transformed into tuxedo-dresses, to strapless number with a netted and flocked fabric in various colors or in a checkered pattern, while several evening gowns are embellished with calculated restraint, always keeping the look clean and light, never overwhelming with too many sequins or too much beading.
On the runway, there are plenty of refreshing touches that Dior could not be seen for some time. Sharp lines, sometimes soft, ultra-clean surfaces, brightly hued color palette for fall winter, or even the saturated colors, prove that Simons has done his homework brilliantly by delving deep into the house’s archives and working with classic Dior silhouettes from the ’40s in a different modern way.
This collection shows that Dior has found their “man” who aims to create a new kind of couture by combining Dior’s fragility with Raf’s modernity. The new creative designer has surely brought a different atmosphere and taste to the house, and proved that change is a good thing.
